LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Ne-Yo has revealed he has spoken to Rihanna since the alleged incident between the pop singer and Chris Brown .

"I spoke to Rihanna ," Ne-Yo told MTV News. "She says she's fine. She didn't go into detail about what happened. I understand it's a painful situation; I didn't push."

As previously reported on AccessHollywood.com, authorities said Brown and a woman were arguing in a car in the Hancock Park area of Los Angeles just after midnight on Sunday February 8.

Brown reportedly stopped the car, he and the woman got out and the argument escalated. A spokesperson for the LAPD previously told Access that the woman suffered visible injuries.

Due to victims' rights, police would not confirm the woman involved was Rihanna , however, a photograph reportedly of Rihanna , showing the singer bruised and with a bloody nose, leaked onto TMZ's Web site last week.

Ne-Yo , a friend of both of the stars, said he has seen the photo and was very affected by it.

"I saw the picture," he confirmed. "That just really -- that hurt me to my heart, man. Again, I still don't know what happened, 'cause I haven't had the opportunity to talk to Chris yet. But to take it to that level really hurt my heart."

Ne-Yo said he is hoping to speak with Brown soon about the alleged incident.

"All I can say is, I'm praying for both of them. They're both in my prayers. I haven't had a chance to talk to Chris yet. I just wanna sit down and talk to that dude and just explain if he doesn't understand: 'That's not something that's excusable, bruh. You have to get a little smarter about whatever it is going on in your relationship. You have to get a little smarter about how you handle certain situations,'" Ne-Yo said.

While he has some strong advice for Brown, Ne-Yo said he still cares about the young man.

"I'm not going to crucify him," the R&B star said. "I'm not going to do that. That's still my homeboy at the end of the day. For it to go to that level was wrong. I won't say who was responsible. I won't pick no sides. I'm just saying it was wrong [that] it had to happen like that, and I'm praying for the both of them."

A little over a week ago, Brown released a statement.

"Words cannot begin to express how sorry and saddened I am over what transpired," he said in the statement. "I am seeking the counseling of my pastor, my mother and other loved ones and I am committed, with God's help, to emerging a better person."

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. -- TV One Access caught up with several stars at last night's NAACP Image Awards pre-show gala and asked them about the Chris Brown / Rihanna incident and the rumors that are running rampant throughout all of Black Hollywood.

Here's what Columbus Short, Alfonso Ribeiro, Judge Mathis & TV One Access's own Tatyana Ali had to say:

VIEW THE PHOTOS: Rihanna: Music's Style Superstar

Columbus Short:
"It's tough, because Chris is like a little brother to me, so it's like, you know, he's young and I hope that -- we all make mistakes, I hope that they can come back from it and you know, be better from it. But it's tough, it's a tough one."

Alfonso Ribeiro:
"I feel bad for both of them for whatever happened, whatever took place that night is a sad situation for both of them and I wish them both well."

VIEW THE PHOTOS: The Latest Star Sightings

Tatyana Ali:
"It's really sad, because they're both so young and honestly, as a young woman myself, my sister and I were driving and we're constantly like, 'Oh my god, I can not believe that that happened.'"

Judge Greg Mathis:
"My advice for him would be to make sure that he demonstrates the remorse that I hope that he has and not be arrogant and assured that he will get away with anything, and to understand that if indeed that he has committed this crime, that he owes a debt to society and a debt to Rihanna ."

LOS ANGELES - Prosecutors said Tuesday they want more evidence from police before determining whether to press charges against Chris Brown , who's accused in a domestic dispute that reportedly involves pop superstar Rihanna .

Police presented a case regarding Brown on Tuesday, but did not release any of its details, Los Angeles County District Attorney spokeswoman Jane Robison said. She said the office would have no further comment on the case.

Brown was arrested Sunday night after surrendering to police, who sought the 19-year-old singer when a woman identified him as her attacker during a fight the night before. Numerous media outlets, citing sources and police officials who were not named, have identified the woman as 20-year-old Rihanna , Brown's longtime girlfriend.

Though an initial police news release indicated that they were investigating a battery on a woman who was injured, Brown was booked only on suspicion of making a criminal threat, a felony. Police have said that prosecutors would determine what charges, if any, were warranted.

The district attorney's kicking the case back to police could signal that prosecutors are seeking to build stronger charges against Brown; or it could mean the current evidence is too flimsy or has holes that would drop it to a misdemeanor or make it go away altogether, Loyola University law professor Stan Goldman said.

"Sending it back certainly isn't the death penalty," Goldman said.

"If you're Chris Brown ," he added, "it's both bad and good."

A police spokeswoman said the department had no comment about the district attorney's decision.

The department has said it was alerted to the incident in the upscale Hancock Park neighborhood by a 911 call, but have provided few official details beyond the initial report. Brown's attorney and spokesman have not returned multiple calls and e-mails seeking comment since Sunday.

Brown remains free on $50,000 bail.

The allegations have at least momentarily tarnished Brown's squeaky-clean image. At least one major sponsor, Wrigley, has suspended ad campaigns featuring the singer, who has scored with hits such as 2005's "Run It!" and a Grammy-nominated duet with Jordin Sparks , "No Air."

WAKS-FM, a Cleveland-area radio station has stopped playing Brown's music until the allegations are resolved after outraged listeners called to criticize the singer. Stations in Pittsburgh and Indianapolis also reportedly pulled Brown's music.

Brown has withdrawn from public appearances in Phoenix scheduled for this weekend before the NBA All-Star game. Rihanna on Tuesday postponed a planned concert in Malaysia.

Brown and Rihanna , whose real name is Robyn Rihanna Fenty, skipped planned performances at Sunday's Grammy Awards, leaving fellow recording artists to try to make sense of the allegations.

Kanye West , who toured with Rihanna , said on Ryan Seacrest 's morning radio show Tuesday morning that the reports of abuse were "devastating."

"I feel like, just as a person, I don't care how famous she is or even if she just worked at McDonald's, that should never happen," West said on the show, which is broadcast on KIIS-FM in Los Angeles. "It should never come to that place."

Which role did you really want and not get?

Mary M., Brooklyn

"There haven't been any roles that I wanted that I didn't get, but there was a movie I wish I had done: 'The Matrix.' At the time [I was approached about it], it wasn't cast with Keanu [Reeves], and I didn't see myself with the person they wanted [in it]. Later I saw the movie and loved it. It was sexy and great because of Carrie-Anne [Moss] and Keanu."

What made you want to do your new movie "All About Steve"?

Annisa J., Chula Vista, CA

"I read the script and laughed so much. It encapsulated everything that has gone awry in our society for girls and women, who are pushed to be homogenized. What happened to all the Carol Burnetts in the world? All these great women were allowed to be this unique blend of things. I'm not the blond bombshell; I'll never be that. There's a piece of Mary in everybody -- to be accepted for who you are and not have to change to be seen as normal. To be true to yourself is something I admire. I wish I was like that all the time."

[ See Sandra's Look Change Over The Years ]

What do you tell a girl who feels ugly because she's not blond or doesn't have a thin nose?

Elizabeth D., N.Y.C.

"Welcome to my broken nose! [Her sister accidentally broke it while lifting a garage door when they were younger.] ...I was rejected in school because I didn't look like the big-breasted, beautiful girls. I was awkward and sad. My mother always said, 'Be original!' but I didn't understand until I changed to be like everyone else. Once I fit in, I was like, 'What have I done?' I realized that my friends before were much cooler, with a great sense of humor and a way of looking at the world that was more fun. But if I hadn't gone through that, I wouldn't have been driven to make my oddities cool. It's what made me have a sense of humor and thick skin. It's like in 'All About Steve' -- I'm making fun of everything people have judged me for and put it into one character."

Which actresses do you admire most?

John S., Greenburgh, NY

"There are amazing women in our business, and they continue to break ground. I make a joke about Meryl Streep: They just need to give her her own category at the Academy Awards, and when she makes a film that year, give her a statue. I just saw Penelope Cruz in 'Elegy.' No one who looks like that should also be an extraordinary actress. I was so blown away by her in that film, I wanted to write a note to applaud her. We have to support each other. I admire actresses who are good to women. I don't like the ones who just don't like women. You can feel it, and I'm like, 'You're degrading yourself.'"

How do you stay in shape?

"People ask, 'How do actresses do it?' Um, they pay us to do this in order to look good on film. I do Pilates, kickboxing, weight training. When I'm in Austin, I run or ride a bike. If I can work out every day, I will. But there are times when I won't do anything for two weeks, and I'm like, 'You know what? I talk enough to burn calories.'"

"My wedding dress. It was beautifully handcrafted, with elegant French lace. Angel Sanchez designed it, and every time I'd try it on, he'd say, 'Sandra, please [lose] five pounds!' I apologize, Angel. I didn't give him those five pounds, but guess what? That round, shiny, happy person was me."

What is your shopping indulgence?

"At the end of every film I buy myself something. I'm frugal and I have to have saved for it. I once bought a big orange Hermes bag, but the guilt that followed from buying it lasted a year. I used it in another movie I just shot, 'The Proposal,' so I feel better about it."

Is there a child in your future?

Megeen C., South Orange, NJ

"I have family in spades. I walk into our house, and it is chaos. Everything we do is about the kids. I haven't had children biologically. I had shut that off; then I met Jesse, and it turned on again. I was like, 'Oh, that's that feeling.' But we realized we had to take care of some other things on this planet first. I hope to God when we get to a place where all is safe, calm, happy and healthy, it's not too late. Not until recently was it that time to say OK. It's now OK. If I waited too long, it's because we were supposed to do other things. If it is just too late? There are millions of children on this planet that I would be honored to call my own."

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Two weeks ago there was no one more popular than President Barack Obama, but a pair of high-waisted jeans and a tight black tank top launched Jessica Simpson to the forefront of the public's attention - even bumping the President off the cover of a popular celebrity magazine.

In their cover image of their final January week's issue, Us Weekly cropped President Obama out of the right-hand side of a picture of the whole First Family --- where he would have appeared was instead a story about Jessica Simpson 's Weight-Gate - a bump that President Obama was able to find humor in.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Kelly Clarkson has returned to the top of the charts with her hit new single, "My Life Would Suck Without You," and according to the singer, her hit is not about someone she has been in love with and despite persistent rumors - it's not about another girl.

When Max Martin and Lukasz "Dr. Luke" Gottwald, the team behind her monster hit " Since U Been Gone," gave Kelly an early version of the new song, she was drawn to it, but wanted to take it in a different direction.

VIEW THE PHOTOS: Since She's Been Gone: Catching Up With Kelly Clarkson

"They sent me the song, but it was kind of a different take on the message. I said, 'I love the beat, I love the song, but I'd rather it be something I would really say, and I'll sell it better if it is something I would relate to,'" Kelly told PopEater.com in a recent interview. "They kind of rewrote the message around this tough take on a sweet relationship. It's saying, 'We're horrible for each other, but at the same time I don't want anyone else.'"

Surely a song as powerful as "My Life Would Suck Without You," must be about someone the singer has been in love with? Not according to Kelly.

VIEW THE PHOTOS: Former 'American Idols'

PopEater.com asked the former "American Idol" champ about a 2007 interview with Elle magazine, where she said she had never been in love. Had this changed by 2009?

"No, no, it hasn't," Kelly explained. "I get asked about that and I'm like, 'Is that odd?' I'm only 26 years old. Everyone's like, 'Well, it's weird that you've never been in love,' and I'm like, 'Well, maybe y'all just fall in love too quickly. Have you ever thought about that?' I'd rather have quality than quantity."

And what are those qualities she's looking for in a relationship?

VIEW THE PHOTOS: Hot Shots Of Country Cutie Carrie Underwood!

"Someone that has their own life because this is a very hard industry," she said. "When I'm dating someone, it's almost like I'm handing them this load that they have to bear -- they have to like read stuff that maybe isn't so pleasant about me."

And, for the record, Kelly is not looking to date a woman.

"People are like, 'Are you secretly a lesbian? Because I'd really love it.' Lesbians tell it to me all the time," Kelly said when asked about the longstanding rumor that she's gay. "I'm like, 'I'm glad it works for you and I wish I liked women like that because oftentimes men are very hard for me, but I happen to like boys.'"

Despite the hopes of many of her fans, she said when it comes to a relationships she could not date a woman, but that diversity is a big part of her everyday life.

"I could never be a lesbian. I would never want to date [someone like] myself, ever. I'm a crazy person. I need some kind of stable, quiet man," Kelly continued. "I don't really care if you're black, white, yellow, gay, straight, crazy, whatever. As long as you're cool and you like the music, and you're coming out to have a good time at the shows, I don't really care. I have everything I just said in my family, so I'm just used to being surrounded by that. I just don't know any different."

She felt the same when her fellow "Idol" alum, Clay Aiken , came out to her.

"I was actually on vacation when I found out. He called and he just said, 'You'll probably get a lot of calls about this, but I just wanted to give you a heads up,'" she recalled. "I honestly don't care if he is gay or isn't gay, and I don't care if he tells people or doesn't tell people. I'm not friends with him for either of those reasons. If I'm a fan of an artist, I don't really care if you're gay or not gay, as long as you're making cool music."

Kelly said she's enjoying the new season of "Idol," especially new judge Kara DioGuardi .

"[She] is one of my friends. So I watch it to see her. Kara's very opinionated and blunt. She's such a kick-ass vocalist and writer. I thought it was kinda cool that they brought her on to freshen up the show," Kelly said.

The 26-year-old, who was the first to be crowned "Idol" champ, said a lot has changed in eight seasons of the FOX reality competition.

"My show -- we were the first ones. We were just a completely different group of people. We didn't know if the show was gonna be a serious joke that was not successful, or if anything was gonna come out of it at the end," she explained. "Even when I won, I still didn't know. Now, every season knows what is possible -- they've seen it."

"They're a little more hard-core because they just want it so bad," she said of the crop of singing hopefuls. "We didn't have that advantage, so we were like, 'We'll probably get laughed at at home, but whatever. It's funny, and I get to sing.'"

"We were very much a bunch of dorks that happened to make it on a TV show," Kelly added.

Ashton Kutcher Takes On His Critics

Story photo: Ashton Kutcher Takes On His CriticsAccess Hollywood

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Ashton Kutcher has been a prolific Twitter user over the past few weeks, but the actor temporarily left the micro-blogging Web site to take on "the spin factories" who have been following his every Twitter move.

"140 characters works for some things. Sometimes you need more space," Ashton wrote on his MySpace blog, referring to Twitter's character limit. "Over the last week my posts on Twitter have received a lot of attention. I have not begged or pulled or asked for any of it. Let me set a few facts straight."

MORE ACCESS ON THESE TOPICS: Ashton Kutcher - Demi Moore - Michael Phelps - Media - News

The actor first addressed his very public spat with his noisy neighbor, which he video blogged and Twittered about multiple times.

"I do not think that going off on my neighbor was a horribly offensive thing to do. I have been woken up every morning for the last four months by hammering and construction on a structure that is very close to our property line after being told the land was being purchased to build a park," Ashton wrote. "Yes, there may have been a more diplomatic way to do it and maybe broadcasting it for the net wasn't the wisest choice."

Ashton explained that he comes from a family of contractors and has the utmost respect for the profession.

"I do, however, have a job that sometimes forces me to work into the night (sometimes the movie business requires that) and occasionally I like to sleep past 7 AM," he continued. "Yes, I live a very fortunate life and for that I am very greatful (sic), I do, however, work for a living. I have a family that I support and a company that I run daily. And I cherish the 4 to 6 hours that I sleep a day."

Next up, Ashton addressed his defense of Michael Phelps, who faced a wave of media criticism after a photo surfaced of the Olympian smoking marijuana. Ashton reiterated that his defense of the athlete was not an acknowledgement of his own use of the drug.

"I don't smoke marijuana and any statement to the contrary is a lie," the actor wrote. "I simply feel that Michael Phelps is entitled to his privacy. The kid made a mistake (he is only human) and anyone who has been in the public eye knows the magnification of minor missteps can be blown way out of proportion."

Ashton also took the opportunity to point out the media's failure to acknowledge his "philanthropic pursuits" with wife Demi Moore, which he noted includes, "building a coalition to abolish 21st century slavery."

"Our intention in becoming more active on the Web has been with the effort to connect to the community in an effort to create a greater bond with the amazing fans that we have adopted over several years," he wrote. "But truth be told we are having fun connecting with people and if we are to be defamed for doing so, so be it. We aren't publishing news. We are sharing with a community of people that are sharing back with us. So I only ask that you don't take our conversation out of context and please stop printing half truths in the media so as to drive up your user consumption and sell more ads on the content that you claim to be news."

The actor-turned-philanthropist ended his blog post with a glimpse of the possible future online activism to come from the Kutcher-Moore household.

"Twitter nation. you rock. ak," he added.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- By now, many have heard Christian Bale 's expletive-laden explosion at a director of photography on the set of "Terminator: Salvation" several months ago, thanks to an audio recording that was leaked to the Internet -- but according to Ain't It Cool News, there's more to the story.

"The DP on 'Terminator: Salvation,' Shane Hurlbut, is apparently a light tweaker," Ain't It Cool editor-in-chief Harry Knowles reported on Tuesday. "He's a fairly young DP and likes to fiddle with his lights on set during action, which is a big 'no no' on most productions. But apparently Shane is a pretty unrepentant light tweaker."

Not only that, but the star was in the middle of filming a scene that laid down, "the emotional center of the film and his character," with Bryce Dallas Howard when Hurlbut's interruption came.

"The scene in question was a very emotional and tough scene," Knowles wrote. "A scene that required... a deep level of immersive concentration."

A source told Knowles, the star had "warned" Hurlbut on multiple occasions about changing the lighting while the cameras were rolling, and that otherwise, he'd been an "utmost gentleman and cool guy" on the set.

"Transformers" director Michael Bay, a man who's seen his fair share of intense on-set moments, also weighed in on Christian's actions in an interview with Billy Bush for Access Hollywood and "The Billy Bush Show" on Wednesday.

"Everyone's allowed to have blow-ups on set, OK?" Michael said. "It's a very tense place. I could totally understand Christian's point of view - it takes him out of the scene when he's trying to give it his all."

But the director said actors don't get three-and-a-half minutes to go off on his sets.

"As a director, after a minute, they say their stuff, after two minutes you go, 'OK, that's it, everyone clear the set,'" he said. "You don't need that huge gigantic forum."

And when it comes to his own blow-ups, Michael doesn't need a lot of time.

"I'm not gonna go on for 10 minutes," he said. "I'll say my piece for about 30 seconds and then I call it a day, move on. We're a business of professionals - you can't go on and on."

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- There are a lot of things important to Angelina Jolie - and frankly, acting just doesn't top the list.

In a new interview with ABC's "Nightline," Angelina said she has her priorities in order and it's clearly family first.

"I'd say kids first.... kids, woman to Brad and then my work internationally and being a kind of... trying to educate myself and trying to learn about the world and... trying to do some good things while I'm alive," the actress said.

"Then, so what is that, fourth?" she laughed of where acting ranks on the list.

And while her work in her most recent film, "Changeling," earned the actress an Oscar nomination, Angelina admitted she rarely watches her own films - and in fact, there are some she has never seen.

"No, I just, I don't really like to watch movies," Angelina revealed. "[But] I love to watch Brad's movies."

And while she said "it's lovely to be nominated" for an Academy Award this year for her role as Christine Collins, come Oscar night, her focus will be on another category - Best Actor.

"I'm rooting for Brad," she said of her mate's nomination for his lead role in "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button."

But when it comes to her role in "Changeling," Angelina said she almost didn't take the part.

"I said I wanted to stay away from it because I couldn't sleep the night I read it, just the thought of anything happening to my kids is something I didn't want to think about," she said.

Once she did sign on to star in the Clint Eastwood -directed film, Angelina pulled her inspiration for the character from her late mother - actress Marcheline Bertrand.

"She was just kind to everybody and never wanted to fight. And, yet, when it came to protecting her children or doing anything in defense of her children, she was very, very strong," Angelina explained. "And that's Christine to me."

In her portrayal of the character -- a single mother who confronted the police after they returned the wrong child to her when her son went missing - Angelina said she sees similarities in herself, noting she wouldn't have let herself be bullied by the police.

But also one big difference Angelina sees from Christine.

"Yeah, I'd probably take him home," she joked of the boy they tried to tell Christine was her son. "I'd adopt him."

Meryl Streep, Kate Winslet Oscar front-runners

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) -

This is the year when 10 actress nominees should be laying burned offerings on the shrine of "Slumdog Millionaire" for not boasting heavyweight leading ladies. In a year when "Slumdog" is heading locomotive-like to the top of the Oscars (unless a recent controversy about its child performers derails it), the two actress categories remain wide open. So who will win and why?

ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE

If justice has anything to do with it, this should be Kate Winslet 's year. After all, Winslet is among the most admired actresses on the planet and is currently running zero for five in her previous shots at the Oscar.

But justice and the Academy have a long history of going their separate ways, as Glenn Close , Alfred Hitchcock and Barbara Stanwyck could attest. Plus, would it be all that just to reward a career rather than an individual performance?

If that's the way the Academy thinks, it could go for any of the five nominees, who this year include Anne Hathaway ("Rachel Getting Married"), Angelina Jolie ("Changeling"), Melissa Leo ("Frozen River") and Meryl Streep ("Doubt"), along with Winslet herself ("The Reader").

Previous wins would indicate that Streep and Winslet are the front-runners.

Winslet has already scooped up a mantleful of baubles for both "The Reader" and "Revolutionary Road," and her failure to get an Oscar nomination for the latter -- almost certainly because the Academy doesn't allow an actress to receive two nominations within the same category in the same year -- means that she'll have a lot of sympathy on her side. But there's a snag: Winslet's previous wins for "Reader" came in the supporting category. For reasons known only to its acting branch, the Academy decided to give her more votes in the lead category. Winslet is untested here. While the odds still favor her, don't rule out the chance of a loss.

As for Streep, true, she won the leading-lady nod at the SAG Awards, but she lost at the Globes when Winslet edged her out for "Road." And Streep has lost before: She's only won two Oscars in 14 previous nominations.

Is there any chance Streep or Winslet will stumble? Unlikely, but there's an argument to be made that the other nominees might be in the running. Hathaway stunned audiences when she proved that she wasn't just the frothy star of popcorn fare like 2001's "The Princess Diaries" or 2006's "The Devil Wears Prada" -- and she did it without an accent, without make-up and without looking ugly, the usual ingredients that help an actress win a nomination.

Angelina Jolie is no mean actress -- she's already won an Oscar for 1999's "Girl, Interrupted," and many people thought she deserved another for 2007's "A Mighty Heart." Plus, the double whammy of Jolie and Eastwood working together on "Changeling" has Oscar written all over it. Or at least, had Oscar written all over it until Eastwood's "Gran Torino" stole all the fire.

That leaves Melissa Leo. She's a near-unknown who doesn't bring star wattage to the table. Which means if ever an underdog stood a chance, it's her. Problem is, there are too many other underdogs competing in the supporting category.

ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE

Five lucky thespians are breathing a collective sigh of relief that Winslet wasn't nominated in the supporting category; otherwise, they'd be betting against themselves.

Now that she's gone, there's little to indicate who the favorite is between Amy Adams ("Doubt"), Penelope Cruz ("Vicky Cristina Barcelona"), Viola Davis ("Doubt"), Taraji P. Henson ("The Curious Case of Benjamin Button") and Marisa Tomei ("The Wrestler").

What's odd is how easy it is to make a case against each one's chances. Adams and Davis have a strike against them in both being nominated for the same film. Davis and Henson have a strike against them in both being African-American, which may split any support that might come their way in the Year of Obama. Cruz has a strike against her in being the only person to get nominated for "Vicky Cristina Barcelona": The fact that not even Woody Allen got a nomination hints that the Academy is indifferent to the film. And Marisa Tomei could be hurt, given that many Academy members felt "The Wrestler" was second only in pain to being head-butted by Hulk Hogan .

But...

Here's why each one could win:

Adams was part of the most acclaimed ensemble cast of the year, the only picture that drew nominations for all four of its leads. And you can't get away from the fact that Hollywood simply adores her. After failing to win for 2005's "Junebug," she's earned the right to a shot at an Oscar now. Plus, what other star could play pure-as-the-driven-snow, and actually make you believe it?

Davis came out of the blue with a role that tugged at our emotions in a way that nothing else in "Doubt" did. We actually cared for her and her dilemma, dealing with a putative molester while needing to educate her son, more than we did for any other character. And she has all the weight of Miramax, which was pushing her right from the start of awards season, with genuine conviction.

Henson is simply one of the best actresses around. That was apparent to any Oscar voter who saw her sweet, sad Shug in 2005's "Hustle & Flow," and it was even more apparent to interviewers who saw how different Henson is from that character in real life. Even rival thesps and their agents were marveling at her talent before "Button" started screening.

Tomei is at that 40-ish point when Hollywood shuts the door on most actresses. The fact that she's had her best role in years at that age will draw resounding support from Academy members who also feel shut out by ageism.

As for Cruz, she's never been better. And not only good, she is also marvelously entertaining, playing the most flamboyant character of any actress nominated this year. Real-life chemistry added sparks to her onscreen interactions with Javier Bardem . And with dialogue like Woody's, the material justifies an Oscar.

Odds favor Cruz. She's been nominated before, may be helped rather than hurt by tabloid attacks for her past relationship with Tom Cruise , and voters will remember her stellar performances in Pedro Almodovar's movies, too.
