Michelle Obama Steps Out in Jason Wu Gown for Inaugural Balls

Michelle Obama celebrated her husband Barack Obama's Inauguration in a dazzling white, one-shouldered Jason Wu gown.

" Michelle Obama once more does something new and fresh [by] working with an emerging fashion star and turning Jason Wu overnight into a household name," Us Weekly fashion director Sasha Charnin Morrison says.

"This type of dress shape/silhouette is something that's completely unexpected. [It's] vibrant and aspirational, full and gorgeous," Charnin Morrison adds. "No one else in the past would have been this striking, this ravishing or been able to pull this look off. She's bringing sexy back."

Look back at famous Inaugural Ball gowns.

Michelle also donned a $3,510 dress made from the 26-year-old Taiwan-born designer for a November interview with Barbara Walters . The Wall Street Journal reports Wu's evening wear sells for $3,000 to $6,000.

What's in a dress?

Michelle's choice is "a balancing act between being a queen and a commoner," Carl Sferrazza Anthony, a historian who's written about first ladies, told The Dallas Morning News. "The inaugural gown is a metaphor for the first lady role."

He added: "They reflect around the world an image of our country."

Earlier today, Michelle stepped out in a gold sheath and matching jacket from Cuban-born designer Isabel Toledo for Barack's swearing-in ceremony. To stay warm in the 30-degree weather, she paired her outfit with olive green gloves from one of her fave shops, J. Crew.

(Her daughters also wore threads from the chain shop to their dad's Inauguration. Malia chose a royal blue jacket, while Sasha bundled-up in a pale pink coat.)

See how famous designers would have dressed Michelle Obama for the Inauguration.

Meanwhile, the president hit the town in a custom tuxedo made by Chicago-based designer Hart Schaffner Marx. (The brand's suits typically retail at Nordstrom for about $895.) Obama hasn't purchased a tux in 15 years, it's been reported.

Barack and Michelle are expected to hop between the 10 official balls scheduled for tonight. They shared a first dance to Beyonce's performance of Etta James ' "At Last" at the Neighborhood Ball.

But after tonight's glitz and glamour, it's down to business.

The new president called America "in the midst of crisis" between the economy woes and war in his speech from the Capitol this afternoon -- but promised action.

"Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real," he said in front of a crowd of thousands, including celebs Oprah Winfrey and Anne Hathaway . "They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America -- they will be met."

Obama Girls Get Advice From Bush Twins

Story photo: Obama Girls Get Advice From Bush TwinsUs Magazine

Malia and Sasha Obama got a few words of advice from Jenna and Barbara Bush in an open letter published in the Wall Street Journal Tuesday.

George W. Bush's daughters point out that they were only 7 years old -- the same age as Sasha -- when their grandfather, George Bush, was sworn in.

Look back at all the kids who lived in the White House.

Said the twins: "If you're traveling with your parents over Halloween, don't let it stop you from doing what you would normally do. Dress up in some imaginative, elaborate costume (if you are like us, a pack of Juicy Fruit and a Vampiress) and trick-or-treat down the plane aisle."

Watch Obama's Inauguration speech.

They also talked about raising pets in the White House. (Obama has promised the girls either a Labradoodle or a Portuguese Water Hound.)

"Our sweet puppy Spot was nursed on the lawn of the White House. And then of course, there's Barney, who most recently bit a reporter," Barbara and Jenna wrote. "Cherish your animals because sometimes you'll need the quiet comfort that only animals can provide."

The twins also suggested Malia, 10, and Sasha get into a little bit of trouble.

"Slide down the banister of the solarium, go to T-ball games, have swimming parties and play Sardines on the White House lawn. Have fun and enjoy your childhood in such a magical place to live and play."

See the Obama family album.

And take advantage of every opportunity, they added.

"When your dad throws out the first pitch for the Yankees, go to the game," they advised. "In fact, go to anything and everything you possibly can: the Kennedy Center for theater, State Dinners, Christmas parties (the White House staff party is our favorite!), museum openings, arrival ceremonies and walks around the monuments. Just go. Four years goes by so fast, so absorb it all, enjoy it all!"

Malia and Sasha Obama should have no problem getting their fave singers, the Jonas Brothers, to swing by their new home.

"I just wanna' hang out at the White House!" Kevin, 20, told reporters at a Television Critics Association panel for their Disney show J.O.N.A.S. Friday.

See the Jonas Bros' baby photos.

He has a few activities in mind.

"I know there's a bowling alley," he added. "And if I ever got the honor to bowl at the White House...."

It wouldn't be the first time the guys played with Barack Obama's daughters.

"We actually met them when we were on [The Ellen DeGeneres Show.] We walked into a room, and they were playing ping pong," said Nick, 15. "They didn't know we were there -- they were very excited.

See the Obama family album.

"It was really cool to meet them after hearing that they'd been fans," Nick added. "We played ping-pong."

Who won?

"They beat me," Nick joked, as Joe, 19, added, "It was a little tough with 25 Secret Service agents!"

The Jonas Brothers will get a chance to mingle with the Obama girls again soon. They're teaming up with Usher , Billy Ray Cyrus and Bow Wow for a Jan. 19 Inauguration concert -- hosted by Michelle Obama -- to honor military families.

How well do you know teen stars?

"It's absolutely an honor to be able to perform. For me, I've always talked about a future in the White House someday, so to be able to go back again should be fun," Nick said. "But it really is an honor. What we're doing is all for the children and the families of the military, and we couldn't have been more thrilled to have been asked."

The guys plan to sing "Burnin' Up" because "we know that Sasha and Malia are fans" and "just some of the songs that we've released over time, 'Lovebug,' 'Year 3000,' and things like that," Nick said.

The Winslet Way

No clothing line, no coffee-cup photo ops, and no schmoozing with Hollywood scenesters. Kate Winslet is a low-key wife and mom who also just happens to be one of the best actresses in the business.

[ Check Out Kate's InStyle Pics ]

33-year-old mother of two Kate Winslet is self-aware, funny, and frank. She is also one of Hollywood's most talented and versatile actresses, whose roles have ranged from Marianne Dashwood in "Sense and Sensibility" (1995) to the punk-haired Clementine who so memorably tortured Jim Carrey in "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" (2004). Even further proof of her talents is now onscreen in two incredible Golden Globenominated performances: "Revolutionary Road" and "The Reader." Either film (or both) could yield a long-overdue Oscar win (she has been nominated five times, a record for someone her age) ...

But in spite of being able to tap into this uncommon talent, Winslet does not hold herself apart, like some creature living in the Garbosphere; she's famously down-to-earth ... and she is so adamant about keeping her head screwed on, that one of the few things that irritate her is to be referred to as a movie star.

[ See Kate's "Titanic" Transformations Over the Years ]

"Please don't call me that," she says. "I don't feel like a movie star in my life at all, and I don't particularly think I behave like one. I don't have my own plane. I don't have a chef or a trainer. To me, you're a movie star only during the time when you're at the Academy Awards or at an important glamorous event. It's very much a hat that you wear, and as soon as the event's over, the hat comes off. I'm back to being me and being Mummy, and that's my priority."

Not that Winslet is totally averse to glamour. "I know that stepping out on the red carpet is something a lot of people in the world would give their right arm to experience," she says, "and I'm always very aware of that feeling of, 'How lucky am I?'"

[ Who Are Kate's Favorite Designers? ]

Winslet's protestations that she's not "a movie star" are marked enough that they could almost be read as reverse snobbery. But it's more that Winslet feels like she doesn't quite belong in that glamour world she only strolls into from time to time. Studying a picture of herself and her fellow actress Cate Blanchett, both of them ravishing in blue gowns at the 2007 Palm Springs International Film Festival, Winslet says drily, "I look and I think, 'Yeah, Cate's a glamorous movie star,' and then I see me and I think, 'Well, I'm sort of nearly there, I'm playing the part.'"

It's a feeling of long standing. "I think our own perception of ourselves is really formed to its fullest extent in the teenage years," Winslet says. "For me that time was great, but I was overweight till I was about 16, and I was teased for it. I was very physically insecure for a really long time, so stepping out of that as an adult has been a really big deal."

[ See a Victorious Kate Showing off her Golden Globes ]

Now, with a figure many women would die (or at least diet) for, Winslet says she doesn't work much at it and, more important, doesn't think much about it, which in itself is a greater achievement than her sinuous curves. "I am comfortable in my own skin," she says. "It really isn't even an issue." Still, she does wish that other people could get over it as well. Photographed nearly naked and looking quite lovely for a recent magazine cover story, Winslet came in for a bout of unkind treatment from the Fleet Street wolf pack. "There was some speculation in the British press -- 'Has she been under the airbrush again?' It really kind of got to me," she says. "What's the big deal? If I'm looking good at the moment, just let me look good already! Don't have a go at me just because I'm not the fat person you always thought I was going to be."

LONDON, U.K. -- Paris Hilton has taken her hit show, "My New BFF" to the UK, where she's hoping to find another pal with the help of reality TV. But in a new interview to promote the British version of her show, Paris revealed there is one celebrity she'd like to add to her roster of pals.

"One day I think that would be a great idea," she said. "Maybe in 20 years."

Paris said she would like to promote world peace if she were to one day be elected.

Shia LaBeouf's Driver's License Suspended

Story photo: Shia LaBeouf's Driver's License SuspendedAccess Hollywood

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Shia LaBeouf 's driver's license has been suspended, as a result of his July 2008 car crash, Access Hollywood has learned.

The suspension, which took effect January 17, 2009, is the result of LaBeouf's "refusal of chemical tests" in the wake of his accident, according to the Department of Motor Vehicles.

The suspension will last a minimum of one year.

In September, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office announced there was "insufficient evidence" to charge the "Transformers" with drunken driving for his involvement in the accident, which left his hand badly injured.

The actor was arrested for suspicion of DUI following the crash after showing "physical signs" of being impaired, LA Sheriff's Department spokesperson Steve Whitmore previously said.

However, at the time, the DA's office did note LaBeouf's refusal to take a breathalyzer test could result in a suspension of his license.

Sheriff's deputies said later that LaBeouf was not at fault in the accident.

AP – President Barack Obama, left, and first lady Michelle Obama dance together at the Neighborhood Inaugural …

WASHINGTON – "At Last" may have been just what President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle were thinking Tuesday night as they glided through their first inaugural dance to the Etta James classic.

The Obamas were the star attraction at the Neighborhood Ball, the first of 10 inaugural celebrations they planned to attend, going into the early hours of Wednesday. The celebrations marked the end of a long day of formal inaugural events and the two-year campaign that put them in the White House.

The president pulled his wife close and they danced a slow, dignified two-step while, offstage, Beyonce sang. The president spun first lady Michelle Obama once in a half-turn.

Obama cut loose in a faster groove a few minutes later, as Shakira, Mary J. Blige, Faith Hill and Mariah Carey sang along with Stevie Wonder to his "Sign, Sealed, Delivered." The song was played at nearly every one of Obama's rallies throughout the campaign.

"You could tell that's a black president from the way he was moving," comedian Jamie Foxx joked following the dance.

The president wore white tie, while Michelle shimmered in a white, one-shouldered, floor-length gown. It was embellished from top to bottom with white floral details and made by 26-year-old New York designer Jason Wu.

"First of all, how good looking is my wife?" Obama asked the crowd of celebrities and supporters alike.

At their second ball, the president pulled the first lady much closer than he did on their first dance. At one point, he wrapped both arms around her waist and locked his fingers together at the small of her back.

"I hope all of you will remember what this campaign and hopefully this presidency is all about," Obama said. "It's about you, pitching in, working together, trying to get past our differences in order to create the kind of world we want to pass on to our children and America."

At the Commander in Chief Ball, Vice President Joe Biden saluted the nation's military men and women and then said he wasn't looking forward to his moment in the spotlight — the dancing, that is.

"The thing that frightens me the most (is) I'm going to have to stand in that circle and dance in a minute." At that, he laughed and did a quick sign of the cross.

Director Ron Howard said he sympathized with the long day Obama was having.

"I feel bad for him," Howard said in an interview with The Associated Press at the Western Ball. "He's had a long day and now he has to do seven dances. This has got to be the grueling part for the first family."

Despite the formal attire and celebrity entertainment, balls aren't overly fancy affairs. Lines often are long to get in, go to the bathroom or check your coat, and the food is heavy on vegetables with dip and cheese cubes.

In a sign of the tough economic times, guests who already paid anywhere from $75 for a ticket to thousands more for a package deal had to buy their own drinks served in small plastic cups. Beer went for $6, cocktails for $9 and champagne for $12.

People waited in line over an hour at Union Station to get into the Eastern States Ball. Because of very limited seating at the Western ball, a number of attendees in long gowns and fancy dress plopped cross-legged on the floor.

"This is what happens in a down economy. No chairs, no highboys — it's the floor and plastic cups," commented ballgoer Brig Lawson, 38, of Las Vegas.

Most of the ladies wore black like their dates, but Patrick Landers stood out in his kilt at the Biden Home States Ball. The 33-year-old Washington attorney moved to the United States from Ireland in 1998.

"I'm here to celebrate this great day and the beginning of a transformation in the United States and the rest of the world in creating a more inclusive society," Landers said.

Not everyone was so thrilled to be attending a ball. Singer Sheryl Crow, doing a sound check for a performance later at the Midwestern Ball, said she was homesick.

"I have not seen my child in four days. I'm miserable," she told her band between songs.

The balls were also a work opportunity of sorts for Vikash Gupta, who took his girlfriend to the Western States Ball even though he's from the Washington suburb of Fairfax, Va. He said it was the only ball with tickets left on Ticketmaster when he went to purchase them two weeks ago. He said he wanted to use the evening as a networking opportunity to promote his software applications company and was hoping to meet some members of Congress.

Sen. Bob Casey, D-Pa., said he, his wife and four daughters ranging in age from 12 to 20 had gotten ready for the inauguration and the ball at locker rooms in his Senate office building on Capitol Hill. He said they slept in his office last night and intend to do so again tonight because of the heavy traffic.

"It was like camping out without the elements," Casey said.

Members of the military and their families who were being celebrated at the Heroes Red White & Blue Ball, with performances by country artist Keni Thomas and Peter Yarrow and Noel Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul and Mary.

Though the ball's guests were plunging into the night's celebration, the reality that the country remains at war hung over the festivities.

Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, reminded the crowd that while attendees celebrated "dressed to the nines" there were more than 280,000 troops on duty "so we can enjoy this day."

Cody Miranda, a Marine Corps veteran, beamed with excitement over the evening's activities. He said he wrestled with post traumatic stress disorder and alcoholism and landed several times in military prison after returning from Iraq.

"It's great to be here to know I'm here after how I was in the military. I was downfallen," he said, adding that he is now in school. He is expecting much from Obama.

"I want my friends out of Iraq," Miranda said.

Even though he was just half a day into his first administration, Obama already had a possible second term on his mind.

"We are going to need you not just today, not just tomorrow, but this year, for the next four years and who knows after that," he said।

Jenny McCarthy: My Heart Goes Out to the Travolta Family

    Buzz up!

Jenny McCarthy, who almost lost her son, Evan, to a seizure, is speaking out about the death of John Travolta's 16-year-old son.

"When I first heard the news about Jett, I slowly kind of sat down...because my heart went out to them -- you know, such compassion and understanding for what they've gone through," McCarthy told Access Hollywood.

    See John Travolta's family album.

McCarthy told Us late last year that she helped her 6-year-old son recover from autism, but he still suffers from seizures.

"Last year, Evan had another seizure where he seized for seven hours on and off," McCarthy said. "We had to put him in a coma for four days so he wouldn't go into cardiac arrest.

"So looking at Jett, I cried out of fear for my own son, and for, I can't even tell you how many children, with autism," she added.

Although it's been reported in the past that Jett suffers from autism, his parents have said he was diagnosed with Kawasaki Syndrome. His Jan. 2 death in the Bahamas was caused by a seizure disorder.

Look back at the stars who died in 2008.

McCarthy, an outspoken autism advocate, says that if Jett did in fact have autism, she understands why Travolta and his wife, Kelly Preston, kept it out of the news.

"It's very difficult to go places where everyone sees who you are and then their eyes immediately go to the child -- because they know what the diagnosis is -- and they stare at the child," she said. "And no one ever wants that feeling, so they tend to keep it quiet.

"They should have the right to keep whatever they want to themselves, and share what they want with the world," she added.
